The community engagement program will bring together community choirs and orchestras from around Australia with local Bendigo groups for an intensive rehearsal period and mainstage performance. In 2020 Bendigo Chamber Choir will be joined by Camberwell Choral from Melbourne and Adelaide Harmony Choir from Adelaide. It will also see world class international artists work with local community groups in workshops, side by side projects as well as public and private masterclasses.
Bendigo Chamber Choir
Since its establishment in 1981 the Bendigo Chamber Choir has performed a wide variety of choral music from medieval through renaissance, baroque classical and romantic through to contemporary.
It has performed in many of Bendigo fine venues including the Sacred Heart Cathedral, St.Pauls Cathedral, the Bendigo Town Hall, the Capital Theatre and the Ulumburra Theatre
The BCC has also performed in other regional centres. The Bendigo Chamber Choir celebrates its 39th year in 2020. Recent concerts have included combining with the MSO Chorus and orchestra for a performance of Messiah, a concert of coronation music including Handel’s four coronation anthems, and a concert titled ‘Stairway To Heaven’ which included music of Mozart, Bach, Taverner, Brahms, Zelenka and Laurisden.
The Bendigo Chamber Choirs Christmas concert this year is on Sunday December 8th in the Bendigo Town Hall will include Motets by Mendelssohn, Lauridsen, Palestrina and Scheidt , a mass by Haydn and R.V.William’s Fantasia on a Christmas Carols.
Typically, the Chorale is 70-90 strong, comprising soprano, alto, tenor and bass voices. Four or five concerts are performed each year, most commonly in May, July, October, November and December. Occasionally, concerts are performed in country centres. Major concerts are performed with the Camerata Orchestra, which was formed in 1975 by the Chorale’s current Conductor, Douglas Heywood. Our more informal annual Christmas Concert is aimed at families, being a Nine Lesson Carol Service with a beautiful mix of Traditional Carols and Christmas Songs.
The repertoire comprises major choral works, and these are usually performed with the Camerata Orchestra. These works have included masses, oratorios, and passion music by such composers as J S Bach, Beethoven, Bloch, Bruckner, Berlioz, Britten, Faure, Handel, Haydn, Mozart, Schubert, Verdi and Vaughan Williams. A variety of smaller sacred and secular works has also been performed, ranging from Palestrina to The Beatles. The Chorale has performed in Festivals and other community events.
Adelaide Harmony Choir –
Established in 1947, the Adelaide Harmony Choir Inc. has been one of Australia’s foremost large choirs for over 70 years. Its wide choral repertoire extends from oratorio and opera to operetta and songs. Each year the choir performs a number of concerts in Adelaide culminating in a traditional Christmas Carols concert. It has also made three concert tours of North America, a concert tour to Japan and to China.
